rafters

The rafters are all up! We are also planning on building a skirt wrapping around three of the four sides. As things are going though we may not have time to finish it all this year. We'll certainly get all the posts and beams up though. It took a bit longer than I had anticipated to build all of the rafters. They are build out of old douglas fir salvaged from old barns and corn cribs. I'm pretty proud of them though I'm hoping I don't have any more rafter building in my near future. Manufatured rafters are pretty cheap and hammering in all the nail plates was pretty painful. Our internet connection is still pretty sketchy, so I appologize to the people who's e-mails I haven't returned yet. For some reason I can't seem to keep our cellular connection connected for more than several minutes at a time. Some kind of software issue. The picture of me nailing in the nail plate is a bit of a spin-off joke, serious geek points to anybody who recognizes it.

Planting Trees

We have had lots of help landscaping this spring. My uncle Mark and aunt Julie stopped by not long ago and brought 25 spruce trees. Mark usually uses them as a grafting rootstock, but these will eventually be a wonderful windbreak for us.
Mom and Dad brought some lilacs last weekend, and Mom and I planted them on a beautiful afternoon. The raspberries and apple trees (a gift from Bob and Jane at Ela Orchard) are growing well, and I just saw the first signs of life on the grape plants.

Windy Ridge pottery

Well, we've decided to name our pottery Windy Ridge pottery. As so far this spring the wind has been more or less constant. We still don't have Internet, but we are testing a little cellular modem card for the evening, it maybe our best bet. Things have been going well here, Christy has planted quite a few trees, along with grapes, raspberries, and asparagus. Christy's also gotten 25 chickens for meat, and we will get ten more ladies this coming week for eggs. We got our building permit for the kiln shed, and have since hired a backhoe to dig out the kiln foundation, and started erecting the kiln shed. I've posted a couple of pictures of what our kiln shed looks like now, along with the truck that delivered our first load of wood. Christy and I were both impressed with the truck, we're both used to dump trucks that strew the wood halfway across the field. This guy stacked up the wood in a perfect stack!
